First and foremost, allow me to destroy a few myths centered around the health and weight loss. There is bad fitness/health information floating out there everywhere:
Myth 1: Weight Loss Diets Actually Work
How else would the weight loss industry make money if they did not want you to believe that “diets” work?
According to studies, dieting plans for the most part never work long-term. Studies also show that 85% of people on a diet usually gain the weight back within a year. Source
Moreover, people who go on diets have a higher chance of gaining weight in the future. Dieting has been a factor for people to gain weight and not lose it. Source
Losing weight is about setting goals, making better choices and creating daily habits that attribute to a healthier and happier lifestyle.
Your primary objective should be to keep it simple. A diet places restrictions on you which make it hard for you to maintain its instructions on a daily basis.
For long-term weight loss; get active daily, make healthy food choices and get the right amount of sleep. Starving yourself is not going to work.
Myth 2: All Carbs Are Bad For Me
Healthy carbohydrates play a significant role in your diet that can produce many benefits.
For example, take a carbohydrate like whole grains. It provides nutrients like fiber, folic acid, B vitamins, and iron. Your overall health depends on these nutrients for growth and to increase your body’s ability to fight off sickness and disease.
Here’s what the Mayo Clinic had to say about certain kinds of healthy carbohydrates:
Some evidence suggests that whole grains and dietary fiber from whole foods help reduce your risk of cardiovascular diseases. Fiber may also protect against obesity and type 2 diabetes. Fiber is also essential for optimal digestive health.
Evidence shows that eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains can help you control your weight. Their bulk and fiber content aids weight control by helping you feel full on fewer calories. Contrary to what low-carb diets claim, very few studies show that a diet rich in healthy carbohydrates leads to weight gain or obesity.
Not all carbs are created equal, there are some that are process, refined and less healthy to consume. We suggest that you replace the bad with healthier carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, etc. Leave the cakes, cookies, kinds of pasta and white bread alone.
Myth 3: Coffee Boosts Metabolism/Helps You Lose Weight
Uhhh. Not so much. It doesn’t quite work like that.
Yes, coffee does give your metabolism a boost for a short period but not that much to make you lose weight long-term. Coffee cannot flush fat from the body.
The caffeine in coffee gives you a burst of energy and may reduce your desire to eat briefly, but there’s not enough evidence and no hard science to prove that regular coffee will aid in weight loss. The fact that Many of us add cream, sugar and other unhealthy junk to your coffee which adds excess calories which cancel out everything I stated above.
